The Discalced Carmelites
The Discalced Carmelites, known officially as the Order of the Discalced Carmelites of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, is a Catholic mendicant order with roots in the 13th century eremitic tradition on Mount Carmel. The first Carmelites were expelled from the Holy Land in the mid 13th century and moved to Europe. The Order of Discalced Carmelites was established in the 16th century, through the reform of the Order by Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross. The Order established its first house in Ireland in 1645.
