Retreat Facilitator with special emphasis on

Ministry to Youth and the Marginalised

The Order of Discalced Carmelites is seeking to recruit a Retreat Facilitator. The role will have special emphasis on youth ministry and the marginalised. This full-time role will begin on September 1, 2021. There will be a six-month probation period. 

 

Work will normally be based in the Carmelite Retreat Centre, Termonbacca, Derry BT48 9XE.

The successful candidate will:
 

  • Under the guidance of the Prior develop, prepare, manage and deliver specific focused retreats, including “awakening” retreats in line with the Carmelite spirituality and the Teresian charism; (note: focused retreats are tailored towards those who want to further develop their faith and spirituality, or another specific purpose: “awakening” retreats are those aimed at Catholics who have lost their way or lost their faith)

 

  • will have a sound understanding of Carmelite Spirituality and the Teresian charism and be able to translate them into a contemporary practical lifestyle, faith based programmes and retreats;

 

  • Create and further develop, support and facilitate local faith based pastoral teams/groups through general spiritual direction and study guidance;

 

  • be available to help with the Youth and Vocation ministry of the Irish and English Regions of the Anglo-Irish Province of Discalced Carmelites;

 

  • be aware of faith issues facing people in today’s culture, and especially issues facing young people;

 

  • be prepared to engage with those who are marginalised and feel isolated within our Church and society;

 

  • develop and manage a strong communications media presence for the Carmelite Order at Termonbacca.

About the person:
 

  • be living a visible lifestyle that is in conformity with Catholic teaching, faith and scripture;

 

  • have an ability to work as part of the Termonbacca Carmelite team and/or be prepared to work on their own initiative when needed;

 

  • be prepared to undertake specific training to further develop current skills, e.g. spiritual direction/guidance, apologetics, the New Evangelization, Carmelite Spirituality and the Teresian Charism in order to gain knowledge that can be applied within their role;

 

  • be an excellent communicator with a firm understanding of apologetics and the New Evangelization;

 

  • will stay up to date through reading/study and research with the latest developments within the Catholic faith, theology and other pertinent matters in order to gain knowledge and apply it to enhance retreats etc;

 

  • be willing to work on evenings and at weekends when required; be prepared to travel on occasions.

 

 

The successful candidate will have:

 

  • a particular faith, zeal and fervour that this particular job demands;

 

  • excellent self-managing leadership qualities and organisational and communication skills;

 

  • a third level qualification in a relevant discipline, e.g., theology, youth ministry, social work, etc.;

 

  • proven experience in the planning and delivering of faith development programmes and experience of working with adults and young people;

 

  • proven proficiency in the use of MS Office and Social Media including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram.   

Hours of work: 37 hrs per week. Salary will be according to the scales of the Joint Negotiating Committee for Youth and Community Workers.

Policies and Practices

 

  1. Observe, understand and implement the Safeguarding Policy of the Order of Discalced Carmelites.

  2. Monitor and make sure work plans follow all applicable laws, especially with regard to health, safety and security of colleagues, volunteers and attendees.

  3. Develop and recommend appropriate plans and initiatives.

  4. Encourage, develop and manage effective relationships with staff, volunteers and eventually other team members.

  5. Establish and maintain effective internal communications, including regular meetings with the Prior and other community members, the Secretary and other personnel to ensure optimum teamwork and productivity.
